After Sonic the Hedgehog director, Jeff Fowler’s decision to change the controversial design of the iconic character in the upcoming movie following fan backlash, a push back of the film’s release was announced for February 14, 2020.In a recent interview with Variety in preparation for his film Terminator: Dark Fate at SDCC, producer Tim Miller commented on how the redesign looks and the process he took after seeing all the fan criticism.

“Look, I was with fans and so was Jeff. When the s–t hit the fan, I went over there and said, “The most important thing to do, man, is say, ‘I f–ked up,’” Miller said. ‘He’d already sent a tweet out an hour before I got there. He’s a good man. It was exactly the right way to handle that. The fans have a voice in this too. There’s a right way to listen.”
Miller said he thinks the movie delay will be worth it and when asked if he’s seen any of the new designs, he responded, “in fact I have. And I think the fans will be pleased.”
Some of the heavy character criticisms were due to humanistic features Sonic appeared to have in the trailer, such as teeth and realistic leg muscles – two things that have always been absent on Sonic in the classic games, and fans felt did not look authentic to his character.
IGN rounded up 6 classic Sonic’s that we would like the see in the redesign, and also had fun putting Sonic’s human teeth awkwardly onto other video game characters.
While we wait for the new trailer and images to drop of Sonic’s redesign, let us know what you think about all of this in the comments below.
